I confess I order Chinese takeout more often than I cook, and I have the stained takeout containers to prove it. Mesa’s sprawl means the good stuff is scattered, from the mall-adjacent reliability of P.

F. Chang’s to the carry-out-only operation at Little Szechuan where they remember your order.

The range runs from hot pot time capsules to a place that gives you free donuts with your meal. I’ve eaten enough mediocre orange chicken to know when something is actually crispy, and that matters here.

The list ahead sorts the durian buns from the soup dumplings.

Highlights
Broth needs more seasoning
Attentive, warm server staff
Durian Bun worth trying
Reasonable two-person price point
Fun early-2000s atmosphere

Top One Hot Pot & Asian Cuisine is a strange beast: a time capsule of early-2000s decor with a broth that needs more salt. I confess I wanted to be annoyed. But the servers are so attentive, so genuinely warm, that I softened. The durian bun is a gamble worth taking, a polarizing, pungent pastry that somehow works. For two people, the price is reasonable, which is a relief given how easy it is to over-order. The music feels like a forgotten mall playlist. I left full, slightly confused, and oddly content. Not bad for a Tuesday.

Free parking, no valet
Fresh cooked to order
Convenient freeway access
Good service, free dessert

P.F. Chang's is the chain everyone loves to mock. I will not mock it here. Free parking and no valet is a win in this town. The food is cooked to order, which means you wait a little, but you get freshness. The freeway access is convenient, and the service is good enough that they gave us free dessert without us asking. I confess I ordered the same thing I always order. It was fine. It was consistent. Sometimes that is exactly what you need from Chinese takeout, even if the takeout comes with cloth napkins.

Highlights
Generous portions, excellent service
Orange beef surpasses orange chicken
Sweet and sour combo, lasting value
Pork loin mein, perfect lo mein
Big flavor, big bang for buck

Chens Chinese Restaurant is the standard by which I now judge all others. The portions are generous, and the service is excellent. I confess I ordered the orange chicken out of habit, but the orange beef is the real winner, crispier and more flavorful. The sweet and sour combo has lasting value, meaning it survives the drive home and still tastes good cold. The pork loin mein is the perfect lo mein, not soggy, not dry. Big flavor, big bang for your buck. This is the kind of place you want to keep secret but cannot. I have already told three people.

Worth returning for later

ONE POT FUSION Hot Pot & Thai Cuisine is a confusing name and a clear mission. The authentic Thai hot pot is the draw, and it delivers. They have rare Thai dishes you do not see on every corner, which I appreciate. The pricing is reasonable throughout, and I confess I got free milk tea for posting about them on social media. I felt cheap, but the tea was good. The service was fine, and the food was solid enough that I would return later. It is not the best hot pot in Mesa, but it is a welcome change from the usual suspects.

Beef stew noodle soup hearty
Clean, comfortable dining room
Flavorful spicy beef platter

Kungfu Kitchen is a clean, comfortable dining room, which is more than I can say for some of the places I eat. The soup dumplings are juicy and tasty, a rare find in this part of town. The salt and pepper fish fillet is crispy and seasoned well. The beef stew noodle soup is hearty, the kind of bowl that fixes a bad day. I confess I also ordered the spicy beef platter, and it was flavorful without being a punishment. This is a place that does the basics right and then some. I left full and satisfied. That is the whole review.

Generous, well-executed lunch specials
Worth the trip, every time

Singing Pandas Asian Restaurant & Bar is consistent, and I mean that in the best way. Every single order I have placed has been the same quality, no surprises. The owner-led passion is visible in the food, which is a cliché, but I believe it here. They have live music most nights, which I usually dread, but it works. The lunch specials are generous and well-executed, a deal that actually tastes like a deal. I confess I go out of my way to come here. It is worth the trip, every time. That is not something I say lightly.

Highlights
Zesty, crispy orange chicken
Caring, homely service
Vegan and gluten-free options
Fresh food, charming owner
Worthwhile carry-out only

Little Szechuan is a carry-out only joint, and I confess I almost missed it. The orange chicken is zesty and crispy, the way it should be but rarely is. The service is caring and homely, which sounds corny, but they remember your order. They have vegan and gluten-free options, which is nice for the people I bring. The food is fresh, and the owner is charming in a gruff way. I have not eaten in, because you cannot. That is fine. The takeout is better than most sit-down places. Worth a trip, just not a long one.

Best Thai in Mesa
Spicy medium packs heat
Beautiful dish presentation
Friendly, welcoming staff
Delicious chicken and beef

Thai Food Corner is the best Thai in Mesa, and I will fight anyone who disagrees. The spicy medium actually packs heat, which is rare. They are not afraid to make you sweat. The presentation is beautiful, which is unusual for takeout, but they do it anyway. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the chicken and beef are both delicious, tender and well-seasoned. I confess I ordered from here three times in one week. I have no shame. This is the place I recommend when someone asks. I also recommend the pad thai, but you figured that out.

Quick, delicious curry dishes
Cozy, reliable neighborhood spot
Standout yellow curry and dumplings
Memorable fried banana dessert

Soda Bun Thai Food is a cozy, reliable neighborhood spot, the kind of place you forget exists until you are hungry and desperate. The curry dishes are quick and delicious, especially the yellow curry, which is a standout. The dumplings are also good, though I confess I ordered them as a side and ate them like a main. The fried banana dessert is memorable, crispy and sweet without being cloying. This is not a place for a fancy night out. It is a place for a Tuesday. That is a compliment. I will be back when I need a fix.

Worth an early visit

Mokis Hawaiian Grill is a fresh alternative to the usual Chinese takeout, and I mean that as a compliment. The service and food are both excellent, which is rare. The decor is cute, with affordable bowls that make you feel like you got a deal. The daily deal pricing is generous, and I confess I went early just to catch it. The bowls are fresh, the portions are solid, and the flavors are not the same old thing. This is not your standard orange chicken spot. It is better. Go early, eat well, and be glad you did.

Highlights
Best kept secret
Generous portion sizes
Fantastic bakery sweets
Helpful customer service
Surprisingly good menu

Sassy's Cafe & Bakery is the best kept secret in Mesa, and I am annoyed I have to share it. The portions are absurd, the kind that require a second meal or a shameful fridge raid. The bakery sweets are fantastic, especially the cinnamon rolls that taste like a hug from a grumpy aunt. The customer service is helpful, which is rare. I confess I went for the bakery and stayed for the surprisingly good menu. The orange chicken was not the star, but it was respectable. This place does too much well. It is exhausting, but in a good way.

Highlights
Hongkong black pepper noodles bomb
Huge shrimp in fried rice
Free donuts with order
Bangkok fried rice recommended
Bold sesame chicken flavor

Ginger Zing does not mess around. The Hongkong black pepper noodles are a bomb, spicy and greasy in all the right ways. The shrimp in the fried rice are huge, almost comically so. They give you free donuts with your order, which feels like a bribe, and I accept it gratefully. The Bangkok fried rice is recommended, and I recommend it back. The sesame chicken is bold, saucy, and unapologetic. I confess I ate too much and regretted nothing. This is takeout that respects your time and your stomach. Go there.
