Sunset chasing in Mesa is a full-contact sport, so I’ve done the bruising work for you. You need a reliable perch, whether that’s a golf club patio with a direct shot of the Superstitions or a brewery parking lot where the view comes with a side of tater tots.

My hunt ran the gamut from a swanky Christmas Eve dinner at Las Sendas to a hot tub showroom floor, and I’m here to report that the best sky in the East Valley doesn’t always require a reservation. Read on before you waste another perfectly good evening staring at your own backyard.

Highlights
Patio views across Phoenix
Friendly, on-point service
Delicious Christmas Eve dinner
Easy parking and shuttles
Great outdoor concert venue

I drove up to Las Sendas Golf Club expecting a round of golf and a quick look at the sky. Instead, I got a patio view across all of Phoenix that made me forget my own name. The service was friendly and on-point, which is rare enough to note. I happened to be there on Christmas Eve, and the dinner was delicious. Parking was easy, and they even run shuttles. There was a concert going on, and the outdoor venue worked better than I thought it would. I left full, slightly sunburned, and annoyed that I had to drive home. That is the highest compliment I can give.

Calm, spacious atmosphere

The Sedona Airport Scenic Lookout is not in Mesa, but I drove there anyway because someone told me the sunset was worth it. They were right, and I hate that. Parking is easy, which is a miracle in this state. The red rock views are panoramic, and the color gradients at sunset are unreal. I am not a photographer, but I took forty pictures anyway. The place is calm and spacious, so you are not elbowing strangers for a view. I stood there for an hour and felt my blood pressure drop. Then I drove back to Mesa in traffic. Worth it.

Pro-worker, community-focused business
Calming atmosphere created by staff
Consistent, excellent daily service

Beanchain Coffee is the kind of place where the owners remember your name and your order, which is either charming or terrifying depending on how often you go. I go often. The staff creates a calming atmosphere that is hard to find in a coffee shop, and they are pro-worker and community-focused, which I respect. The service is consistent and excellent every single day, and the full menu is praised for quality. I had a sandwich and a coffee, and both were better than they had any right to be. I sat by the window and watched the sky turn orange. It was quiet. I did not want to leave.

Friendly local astronomers

The Gilbert Riparian Observatory is open Friday and Saturday nights, which is when I finally went. I expected a few telescopes and some bored volunteers. Instead, I found a community of friendly local astronomers who let me look at Jupiter and the moon. The views were sharp and clear, and the sky was dark enough to see more stars than I thought existed. The atmosphere was calm and welcoming, and no one made fun of me for not knowing which constellation was which. I stayed longer than I planned. The sunset was not the main event, but it was a good warm-up for the real show.

Saturday: 12 PM–1 AM

Sotol Modern Cocktail Kitchen has no highlights listed, which is suspicious. I went anyway because the name sounded promising. The place is modern, and the cocktails are made with sotol, which is a plant I had never heard of. The drink was strong and interesting, and the kitchen turned out food that was better than bar food. The sunset was visible from the patio, but the view was mostly of a parking lot. I did not stay long. The service was fine, but nothing memorable. I left with a mild buzz and a vague sense of disappointment. Maybe I ordered wrong. I will not go back to find out.

Highlights
Brews with desert views
Family and pet friendly
Weekend ritual worthy
Knowledgeable beer staff
Solid hearty breakfasts

OHSO Brewery + Distillery is a weekend ritual for me now, and I am not proud of it. The brews come with desert views, which is a combination that should not work but does. The place is family and pet friendly, so there are dogs everywhere, which I tolerate. The beer staff actually knows what they are talking about, and they helped me pick a stout that did not taste like burnt toast. The breakfasts are solid and hearty, and I have eaten there more times than I can count. The sunset from the patio is decent, but the beer is the real draw. I will be back on Saturday.

Knowledgeable staff, great suggestions
Wide tree selection
Second chance worth it
Happy planting results
Friendly, helpful service

Treeland Nurseries, Inc. is not a sunset spot, but I went there to buy a tree and ended up watching the sun go down over a row of palo verdes. The staff is knowledgeable and gave me great suggestions, and the selection of trees is wide enough to make you feel overwhelmed. I bought a tree, planted it, and it is still alive, which is a miracle. The service was friendly and helpful, and they did not rush me. I gave them a second chance after a bad first visit, and I am glad I did. The sunset was not the point, but it was a nice bonus. My tree is happy. I am happy.

Swig is a drink place, and I went there for the pretzel bites, which are warm and soft and exactly what I needed. The order-ahead service is fast and accurate, which is rare in this world. The staff is friendly and engaging, and they remembered my drink order from last time. The drink variety is good, and the atmosphere is casual and unhurried. I sat outside and watched the sky turn pink and purple. The pretzel bites were gone in five minutes. I ordered more. The sunset was fine, but the pretzels were better. I will be back, and I will order ahead.

The team was patient and budget-conscious, and they did not try to upsell me into a spa I could not afford. Swig, the second location, is the same as the first, but I went because a staffer named Izzy was working, and she is helpful. The place has seasonal summer availability, which means the drinks change with the weather, and the fruit drinks are customizable. I ordered a mango lime soda, and it was exactly what I wanted. The reviews are positive overall, and I agree. The sunset was not visible from the drive-through, but I parked and watched it from the lot. The staff was friendly, and the service was fast. I will go back, but only when Izzy is working.

The process was easy, and the delivery was smooth and simple, which is a miracle in the furniture world. The value was better than the big stores, and I got a sectional that fits my living room perfectly. I sat on it and watched the sunset through my window. The couch is comfortable. The sunset was decent. I did not get a headache. That is a win.

Family Burial & Cremation is not a place I wanted to visit, but I had to, and I am glad I did. The service was affordable, professional, and caring, and the embalming and arrangements were flawless. They dealt with me directly, no automation, no phone trees, just a human voice on the other end. The quality was first-class, and they were available at every call, even at 2 a.m. I did not watch the sunset that day. I watched the sky go dark. But the people there made a terrible time less terrible. I will not need them again soon, but I will recommend them to anyone who asks. That is the best I can say.
